Professional Automotive Repair

My name is Clarke Otten and I am the owner of Professional Automotive Repair. I started my business in 1985 as a specialty store serving only Volvo. Like all entrepreneurs, I had planned to develop my business over the years. However, I have never let my desire for growth exceed my desire to maintain the highest quality in technical expertise and customer service. Over the years, I have learned a lot. 1) Three is the optimal number of stores that I can effectively monitor. 2) I learned that with two stores, I could get a good “average” benchmark at which I could own all the stores. One of those benchmarks turned out to be the number of Volvo owners I could hope to serve in a given geographic area. If I wanted to expand my business, I had to expand into additional markets. But knowing two stores was my optimal number, and having reached maximum market penetration with Volvo owners in my current market areas, I was faced with the conundrum of how to grow my business.
